Google Desktop

After reading about the Google Desktop, I was immediately disappointed that there was only a release for Windoze. Even though I had no intention of using it on my Mac(Mac searching rocks already), I always see companies in a better light if they support more than just Windoze.

One really cool extension might be corporate shared drives. At every company that I have worked for, there is always a company wide shared drive that contain's massive quantities of documents. Normally, searching this document wasteland would take days, months, or lifetimes. Since I believe this feature would bring great value, I think companies would pay good money for google's search functionality in this environment.

Im indexing my Windoze box as we speak, more details to come.

Re: Google Desktop

Searching on a mac stinks. It's horrible. However, I've been playing with search in 10.4, and it is great. Seriously great. I've can only guess how the google product works, having only seen the screen shots. But it seems close to the Apple offering. I have to imagine that without the close ties to the OS that Apple has it will lag behind it in some ways. But, I'm guessing that google, being google, will have more expressive searches. (minus that fs level metadata coming in 10.4) Come on Apple, let's get 10.4 out the door.

Re: Google Desktop

I guess when I said Mac searching rocks, I was referring more to the way your files are setup. If I'm attempting to find a set of files that match a certain criteria, I really only need to search my home directory. With windoze, I can store my files in c:\winnt\system32\profiles if I like. This is what makes searching so painful in windows IMHO. I do not have a copy of 10.4 so I will have to take your word for it. I too, look forward to it as well as Java 5. I sure wish they would release Java 5 independent of an OS Upgrade.
